South African porridge, three different breakfasts

Porridge in South Africa is not one thing. Mabela is sorghum, reddish brown, nutty and slightly sour, and it is the one people crave hardest once they leave. Kreemymeel is the fine maize version, smooth and mild, which is what most children were raised on. Maize meal cooked stiff becomes pap, which is breakfast, lunch and dinner depending on how much water goes in. None of these are on a Canadian shelf, so they come over from home.

Mabela and Kreemymeel, the two breakfast bowls

Monati Super Mabela comes in 1kg and 2kg, and it wants a long slow cook with a pinch of salt, finished with milk and sugar or golden syrup. Bokomo Kreemymeel is quicker and smoother, closer to what a Canadian would recognise as cream of wheat but with a maize flavour that is not the same at all. Both keep well in a sealed container, and both are the sort of thing people order two of at a time once they find them.

Maize meal, and where pap belongs

Iwisa maize meal and Premier Braaipap live here as breakfast staples, but if you came looking for pap and samp for a braai rather than a breakfast bowl, the maize meal and samp page is the one you want. Same grains, different meal. Soft porridge for breakfast, stiff pap with wors, crumbly krummelpap with a stew. The water ratio is the entire difference and it is worth getting right.

What goes on top

Golden syrup, milk and sugar for mabela. Butter and salt for stiff pap. Chakalaka for anything savoury. If you are stocking a South African breakfast properly, the jams and spreads page and the tea and coffee page complete it. Everything ships across Canada, and the bigger bags are the better value if you are feeding a household.

Rusks

Frequently asked questions

WHAT SOUTH AFRICAN PORRIDGE AND CEREAL DO YOU STOCK?

Mabela sorghum porridge, Bokomo Kreemymeel, Iwisa maize meal and Premier Braaipap, plus Ouma rusks for dunking. All brought over from South Africa rather than a Canadian substitute.

HOW DO YOU COOK MABELA PORRIDGE?

Slowly, with a pinch of salt, simmered until it thickens rather than boiled hard. Finish it with milk and sugar or golden syrup. It takes longer than instant oats, but that is what gives it the right texture.

DO YOU SHIP PORRIDGE AND CEREAL ACROSS CANADA?

Yes, everywhere in Canada. The bigger bags of maize meal and mabela are better value if you are feeding a household, and most people order them alongside the jams and rusks.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MABELA AND KREEMYMEEL?

Mabela is sorghum, reddish brown with a nutty, slightly sour taste. Kreemymeel is fine maize, smooth and mild, closer to what a Canadian would recognise as cream of wheat. Most households have both and choose depending on the morning.
