South African jams and spreads for the breakfast table

South African breakfast is built on toast and what goes on it, and every one of those things tastes specific. All Gold apricot superfine is the jam most people mean when they say jam. Black Cat is the peanut butter, smooth or crunchy, and it is thicker and less sweet than the Canadian versions. Marmite divides households, as it always has. Illovo golden syrup goes on everything from porridge to pancakes. Brought over from South Africa, not substituted with a local approximation.

South African jam, marmalade and preserves

All Gold covers apricot, strawberry and sweet orange marmalade, which is the standard three in most kitchens. Goldcrest gooseberry jam is the one people are surprised to find. Hillcrest Berry Orchards ripe fig and watermelon preserve are the small-batch Cape versions that go on a cheese board rather than toast, and Soet Tand three fruit marmalade sits between the two. Watermelon preserve in particular is a South African thing that almost never appears on a Canadian shelf.

Marmite, Black Cat and the savoury half

Marmite is yeast extract, salty and dark, and the correct amount is far less than you think if you did not grow up with it. Black Cat peanut butter is the other daily spread, and Nola traditional sandwich spread is the tangy one that goes in a school lunch. Crosse and Blackwell tangy mayonnaise belongs in this family too, and it is one of our better selling grocery items, because there is genuinely nothing here that tastes like it.

Rusks & Biscuits

What South Africans put it on

Toast, obviously, but also a rusk broken into a bowl, a slice of white bread with Marmite and butter, or golden syrup over mabela porridge. If you are stocking a full pantry, the tinned goods and the rusks pages are the two that go with this one. Everything ships across Canada, and jars travel well when they go out with a larger order.

Frequently asked questions

WHAT SOUTH AFRICAN JAMS AND SPREADS DO YOU STOCK?

All Gold apricot jam and marmalade, Black Cat peanut butter, Marmite, Illovo golden syrup, Nola sandwich spread and Hillcrest preserves. All brought over from South Africa rather than a Canadian substitute.

HOW MUCH MARMITE SHOULD YOU USE?

Far less than you think. It is salty and concentrated, so a thin scrape on buttered toast is the correct amount if you did not grow up with it, not a spoonful.

DO YOU SHIP JAMS AND SPREADS ACROSS CANADA?

Yes, everywhere in Canada. Jars travel well, and most people order them alongside the rusks or the tinned goods for a full pantry restock.

IS BLACK CAT PEANUT BUTTER DIFFERENT FROM CANADIAN PEANUT BUTTER?

Yes. Black Cat is thicker and less sweet than most Canadian brands, available smooth or crunchy, and it is the peanut butter most South Africans grew up with rather than a substitute.
