Braai spices, the seasoning that makes the fire taste like home

A braai (pronounced "bry," the South African word for a barbecue) is built on its spice as much as its coals, and Robertson's is the name most South African kitchens reach for first. We stock Robertson's Chicken Spice, Steak and Chop Spice and Barbecue Spice, Aromat (the all purpose seasoning that goes on almost everything), Ina Paarman's braai marinades and meat seasoning, and Marina and Funky Ouma braai salts, and ship them all across Canada from Barrie, Ontario.

Part of the wider spice rack

Braai spice is one shelf of a bigger pantry. The Spices and Seasoning collection covers everyday South African cooking beyond the fire, from stews to bakes, for the herbs and blends that do not belong on the coals.

Robertson, the name behind most of these jars

Most of what is on this page is Robertson's, South Africa's most recognised spice brand. The full Robertson range, braai spices included, lives on its own page if you want to see everything the brand makes in one place.

Robertson Spices

Spice for the fire, and the pots to cook on it

A braai spice needs a braai. Our Braai and Potjie collection has the cast iron pots and braai tools that go with these seasonings, all shipped from the same Barrie warehouse.

Frequently asked questions

What is braai spice?

Braai spice is a South African seasoning blend made for grilling over coals or gas, usually salt based with paprika, garlic and other spices. Robertson's Steak and Chop Spice and Barbecue Spice are two of the most common jars in a South African kitchen.

What is Aromat used for?

Aromat is an all purpose South African seasoning, and it goes on eggs, chips, stews and braai meat alike. It is less a braai spice than a table seasoning most South Africans keep within reach.

Can I buy Robertson spices in Canada?

Yes. We stock Robertson's Chicken Spice, Steak and Chop Spice, Barbecue Spice and Portuguese Chicken Spice in Barrie, Ontario, and ship them anywhere in Canada.

What is the difference between braai spice and steak and chop spice?

They overlap. Braai spice is the general term for any seasoning made for the fire, while steak and chop spice is usually a specific, saltier blend built for red meat. Chicken spice is milder and made for poultry.
