Koeksisters and the South African dessert table

A koeksister is a plaited dough, fried and then dropped straight into ice cold syrup, which is what gives it the crack on the outside and the soaked, sticky centre. Get the temperature wrong at either end and you have a doughnut. Ours are made in the Barrie shop by hand, which is the only way they get made properly, and they go out in batches rather than sitting in a freezer waiting for an order.

South African desserts you cannot order anywhere else in Ontario

Dadelballetjies are the date balls that appear on every South African tea tray, rolled in coconut and set aside for the aunties. Ouma Bettie's rusks in plain and raisin muesli are the small-batch version of the rusk, more like a proper baked good than a boxed one. Between the three, this page is the only place in the province making these to order rather than importing an approximation of them.

South African Store Canada

Made here, not brought over

Almost everything else on this site is South African grocery that we bring over. This page is the exception, along with the biltong. These are made in our own kitchen in Barrie, by people who grew up eating them, which is why the syrup ratio is right and the plait holds. It also means quantities are limited and fresh, so order ahead if you need a tray for a gathering.

South African Chocolates

What South Africans serve them with

Koeksisters go with coffee or rooibos and nothing else, at about eleven in the morning. Dadelballetjies belong on the same tray. If you are building a full South African dessert table, the peppermint crisp tart is the other half of it, made with Peppermint Crisp, Nestle Caramel Treat and Tennis biscuits, all of which are on the site.

Frequently asked questions

WHAT SOUTH AFRICAN HOME BAKES DO YOU STOCK?

Koeksisters, dadelballetjies, and Ouma Bettie's rusks in plain and raisin muesli, all made by hand in our Barrie kitchen rather than imported or bought in.

HOW DO YOU EAT A KOEKSISTER?

Cold, with your hands, alongside coffee or rooibos. They are meant to be sticky, so keep a napkin nearby. Rusks are the opposite: dunked hot into coffee or tea until they soften.

DO YOU SHIP KOEKSISTERS AND HOME BAKES ACROSS CANADA?

Yes, everywhere in Canada. Because these are baked fresh in small batches rather than kept frozen, order ahead if you need a larger quantity for an event.

IS A KOEKSISTER THE SAME AS A DOUGHNUT?

Not quite. Both are fried dough, but a koeksister is plaited and dropped straight into ice cold syrup while still hot, which gives it a crisp, soaked exterior rather than a sugared or glazed one.
