South African sweets from the cafe down the road

Every South African has a version of the same memory: a handful of coins, a cafe counter and a paper bag. These are the sweets in that bag. Jelly Tots, Fizzers, Sparkles, TV Bar and Allsorts are all Beacon, which has been making them since long before anybody reading this was allowed to buy them alone. None of it is on a Canadian shelf, so the only way to get it here is to bring it over, which is what we do.

South African candy that has no Canadian equivalent

Fizzers are the closest thing to a national sweet, chewy and sharp, and the cream soda and strawberry versions are the two everyone argues about. Sparkles are the fruit chews in the 125g bag that ends up in a car door. Jelly Tots need no explanation to anyone who went to a South African birthday party. Tutti Frutti Allsorts is the liquorice one that adults claim not to like and then finish.

Nougat, butterscotch and the grown-up shelf

Massam's nougat is the one that turns up at Christmas and on road trips, in honey cashew, almond cherry and honey almond. Amajoya butterscotch is the hard sweet that lived in a handbag and got handed out in church. Peanut Snack and Cadbury Tumbles Raisins sit somewhere between a sweet and a chocolate, which is exactly where they were always meant to be.

Buying sweets to send or to share

Sweets are the most common thing people add to a first order, usually to see whether we really have them. They ship across Canada without any special handling, they keep well, and they are the easiest way to put something South African in a parcel for a homesick student or a grandchild who has never been. The chocolate page is the other half of that parcel.

Frequently asked questions

WHAT SOUTH AFRICAN SWEETS DO YOU STOCK?

Beacon brand sweets like Jelly Tots, Fizzers, Sparkles, TV Bar and Tutti Frutti Allsorts, plus Massam's nougat, Amajoya butterscotch and Cadbury Tumbles Raisins. All brought over from South Africa rather than a local substitute.

ARE FIZZERS THE SAME AS SOUTH AFRICAN CHEWS?

Yes, Fizzers are Beacon's fruit chew and the one most South Africans mean when they say sweets from the corner cafe. Cream soda and strawberry are the two flavours people argue over.

DO YOU SHIP SOUTH AFRICAN SWEETS ACROSS CANADA?

Yes, everywhere in Canada. Sweets keep well and travel well, and most people add them to a wider grocery order alongside chocolate and biscuits.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SOUTH AFRICAN SWEETS AND CHOCOLATE?

Sweets are fruit chews, nougat, butterscotch and hard candy rather than chocolate bars. Beacon makes most of the sweets on this page, while the chocolate page covers Cadbury slabs and Peppermint Crisp.
