South African tea and coffee, the way it is made at home

South African tea is not the same conversation as tea in Canada. Rooibos is the national drink, red, naturally caffeine free and drunk by children and grandparents alike. Five Roses and Joko are the strong everyday black teas that most households run alongside it. On the coffee side, chicory blends like Frisco and Ricoffy are what people grew up drinking, and no Canadian instant tastes remotely like them. All of it is brought over, not substituted.

Rooibos and the South African tea shelf

Freshpak is the rooibos in most South African kitchens, and the Woolworths honeybush infusion is the softer, sweeter cousin. Rooibos has no caffeine at all, which is why it goes in a baby's bottle in South Africa and why it is the last drink of the night in half the country. Brew it longer than you would brew black tea, at least five minutes, because it does not go bitter. The full rooibos range has its own page.

Frisco, Ricoffy and the chicory habit

Frisco and Nescafe Ricoffy are instant coffees blended with chicory, which is where the roasted, slightly sweet edge comes from. If you have tried to replace them with a Canadian instant you already know it does not work, because there is no chicory in it. Made with hot milk rather than water is the traditional way. People who did not grow up with it usually find it strange for one cup and then keep buying it.

Milo, for the ones who never drank coffee

Milo is not a hot chocolate, whatever the shelf says. It is malt, and South Africans eat it dry off a spoon as often as they drink it. It is one of the most searched things on our site, which says everything about how many people are looking for it in Canada. Pair any of this with a rusk and you have the South African breakfast in its entirety.

Frequently asked questions

WHAT SOUTH AFRICAN TEA AND COFFEE DO YOU STOCK?

Freshpak rooibos, Five Roses and Joko black tea, Frisco and Ricoffy chicory coffee, and Milo malt drink. All brought over from South Africa rather than swapped for a Canadian equivalent.

HOW LONG SHOULD YOU BREW ROOIBOS TEA?

At least five minutes, longer than you would brew black tea, because rooibos does not go bitter no matter how long it steeps.

DO YOU SHIP TEA AND COFFEE ACROSS CANADA?

Yes, everywhere in Canada. None of it is fragile, so it ships well on its own or alongside a wider grocery order.

IS ROOIBOS TEA CAFFEINE FREE?

Yes. Rooibos has no caffeine at all, which is why it is safe for children and is often the last drink of the night in South African households.
