Rooibos tea, the way South Africans drink it

Rooibos (pronounced "roy-boss", Afrikaans for red bush) is a caffeine-free tea from the Cederberg mountains north of Cape Town, and it is the everyday cup in most South African homes. We stock the brand South Africans actually buy, Freshpak, plus honeybush and flavoured rooibos from Woolworths, and ship them across Canada from Barrie.

Freshpak, the one in every kitchen

Freshpak is the rooibos South Africans grew up with: tagless bags, a clean, slightly sweet cup, nothing added. Brew it strong, take it with milk and sugar or black with a slice of lemon, and drink it at any hour, because there is no caffeine to keep you up.

Honeybush and flavoured rooibos

Honeybush is rooibos's sweeter cousin from the same mountains, and Woolworths blends the two as Honeybos. Vanilla rooibos is the other one people ask for. Both are caffeine-free and both work iced in a Canadian summer.

Cold Beverages

Rooibos and a rusk

The proper way to drink it is with an Ouma rusk held under the surface until it softens. Rusks are on the shelf next door, and our biltong, made in our Barrie butchery, ships in the same box.

Frequently asked questions

Is rooibos tea caffeine free?

Yes. Rooibos is naturally caffeine-free, which is why South Africans drink it from breakfast to bedtime and give it to children. Honeybush is caffeine-free as well.

Where can I buy Freshpak rooibos in Canada?

Here. Bokkie's Biltong in Barrie, Ontario stocks Freshpak rooibos and ships it anywhere in Canada at a flat rate, alongside the rest of the South African pantry.

What does rooibos taste like?

Smooth, slightly sweet and a little nutty, with none of the bitterness of black tea. It takes milk well and does not go tannic if you leave the bag in.

What is the difference between rooibos and honeybush?

Both are South African fynbos plants and both are caffeine-free. Honeybush is sweeter and more floral, rooibos is cleaner and more neutral. Honeybos is the two blended together.
