South African chocolate, and why it does not taste the same here

Cadbury exists in Canada, so people assume a Dairy Milk is a Dairy Milk. It is not. The South African recipe is made to a different formulation and it eats creamier and softer, which is exactly what everybody notices and nobody can explain until they taste them side by side. Then there are the bars that simply do not exist here at all: Peppermint Crisp, Bar-One, Tex, Top Deck and NOSH. Every slab on this page came from South Africa.

The 150g slabs are the ones families order by the box: Dairy Milk, Fruit & Nut, WholeNut, Mint Crisp and the Milky Bar. Top Deck is the white and milk layered one that never made it to Canadian shelves. Rum & Raisin is the grandparents' bar. Whispers and Tumbles are the pouches that get eaten in the car on the way home from the shop, which is not our fault and never was.

Peppermint Crisp is the most requested single bar we stock, and half of that demand is not for eating. It is for peppermint crisp tart, the caramel, cream and crushed-bar dessert that appears at every South African gathering. Grate the bar over layers of Nestle Caramel Treat and Tennis biscuits and you are done. Bar-One is the other Nestle staple, the one that used to be advertised as fuel for rugby players and still gets bought that way.

Chocolate is the one category where Canadian summers matter. We pack it carefully and it travels well most of the year, but if you are ordering in July into a hot region, order early in the week. Most people put chocolate in with a wider grocery order, which is the sensible way to do it, and the sweets and biscuits pages are the usual companions.
