South African drinks you cannot buy in a Canadian shop

Appletiser is the one people ask for first. Sparkling pressed apple juice, no sugar added, and there is nothing on a Canadian shelf that tastes like it, which is why it turns up at every South African wedding and Christmas table in the country. Grapetiser is the red version. Then there are the cordials and the fizzy drinks that never crossed the Atlantic at all. All of it is brought over rather than swapped for something similar, because similar is not the point.

Oros, Mazoe and the squash cupboard

Oros orange squash is a childhood in a bottle, and the 2L Brookes bottle is the size most families order. Mazoe raspberry cordial is the Zimbabwean cousin that South Africans grew up drinking just as much, and it is one of the most searched things on our site by people who assume nobody in Canada stocks it. Dilute both harder than you think you should, because they are concentrated properly rather than watered down before sale.

Sparletta, Sparberry and Lemon Twist

Sparletta Sparberry is the raspberry cream soda that no Canadian brand has ever tried to copy, and Schweppes Lemon Twist is the sharp one that goes into a glass with ice on a hot day. These are the flavours in the fridge at a braai. They ship as glass or cans, so they are packed carefully, and most people order them alongside a wider grocery box rather than on their own.

Coffee & Tea

What to serve them with

Appletiser with Christmas lunch, Oros with anything involving children, Sparberry with a braai. If you are building a full South African table, the braai spices, the potjie pots and the biltong are the rest of it. Ordering the drinks together with the heavy grocery items is the cheapest way to do it, because it is one shipment rather than three.

Frequently asked questions

WHAT SOUTH AFRICAN DRINKS DO YOU STOCK?

Appletiser and Grapetiser, Oros and Brookes orange squash, Mazoe raspberry cordial, Sparletta Sparberry and Schweppes Lemon Twist. All brought over from South Africa rather than a Canadian substitute.

HOW MUCH WATER DO YOU ADD TO OROS OR MAZOE?

Dilute harder than you would guess. Both are made properly concentrated rather than watered down before sale, so a splash goes further than a Canadian squash or cordial would.

DO YOU SHIP SOUTH AFRICAN DRINKS ACROSS CANADA?

Yes, everywhere in Canada. Cans and cordials travel well, and glass bottles like Appletiser are packed carefully. Most people order drinks alongside a wider grocery box.

IS APPLETISER THE SAME AS APPLE JUICE OR CIDER?

No. Appletiser is sparkling pressed apple juice, carbonated and with no sugar added, so it drinks more like a soft drink than a still juice or cider. There is nothing quite like it on a Canadian shelf.
