South African snacks, the flavours from home

Most of what is on this shelf is not sold anywhere else in Canada, which is the whole reason the shelf exists. A Simba chip does not taste like its Canadian equivalent, a rusk is built for dunking in coffee rather than eating dry, and the sweets are the ones you remember rather than the ones you can find locally. If you grew up on them you already know which packet you are after. If you did not, start with the chips.

Part of the wider South African pantry

Snacks are one aisle of a bigger shop. The South African Store Canada page has the full range, biltong, drinks, spices, sweets and rusks, all shipped across the country from the same Barrie shop.

The chips every South African grew up on

Most of the chips on this page are Simba, South Africa's biggest chip maker. The full Simba range, from NikNaks to Chutney and Mexican Chilli, lives on its own page if you want to see every flavour we carry.

No snack table is complete without biltong

Biltong (air-dried, spiced beef) is the snack most South Africans reach for first. Our Biltong collection has Bokkie's own range in original, chilli and hunter's flavours, cut thick or thin, all made and shipped from the same Barrie kitchen.

Frequently asked questions

What is included in the South African Snacks collection?

This page brings together every South African snack we stock: Simba chips, Bakers biscuits and crackers, Ouma rusks, Cadbury, Beacon and Massam's sweets, and Bokkie's biltong sticks, all shipped across Canada from Barrie, Ontario.

What are NikNaks?

NikNaks are a South African maize snack, similar to a corn puff, best known in the cheese flavour. They are one of the country's most recognised snack brands alongside Simba, and we stock the original Cheesy and the spicier Flamin Hot version.

Can I buy Simba chips in Canada?

Yes. We stock a wide range of Simba chips, from Chutney and Mexican Chilli to NikNaks and Smoked Beef, and ship them across Canada from our warehouse in Barrie, Ontario.

What is the difference between rusks and biscuits?

Rusks, like Ouma's, are baked twice and dried hard, meant to be dunked in coffee or rooibos until they soften. Biscuits, like Bakers Salticrax or Romany Creams, are soft-baked and eaten straight from the pack. We stock both South African favourites on this page.

Which South African snacks should I try first?

If you did not grow up with them, start with a bag of NikNaks, a packet of Simba chips in Mexican Chilli and a box of Ouma rusks for your morning coffee. Add a Beacon or Cadbury bar for something sweet and a pack of biltong sticks for something savoury.

Do you sell South African sweets and chocolate?

Yes. You will find Beacon, Cadbury and Nestle favourites on this page, and the full selection on our South African Sweets and South African Chocolates pages, including bars that are hard to find in Canadian shops.

Do you ship South African snacks across Canada?

Yes. Every snack on this page ships across Canada from our shop in Barrie, Ontario.

Can I buy South African snacks in store in Barrie?

Yes. You can buy them in person at our shop in Barrie, Ontario, alongside our butcher-made biltong.
